Yokohama is a great city for those with an interest in art. Various galleries deserve a mention, such as the Yokohama Museum of Art, a rather interesting contemporary museum exhibiting modern works from both Europe and Japan, which have had a mutual influence on each other.

Full of contemporary pieces and sure to please, the Yokohama Museum of Modern Art offers a welcomed contrast to the city's more traditional galleries, as do the rather stylish glassworks at the Pola Museum of Art.

The Yokohama Museum of Art is housed within an attractive and spacious building, which is airy and well-lit, enhancing the display of its gems by Picasso, Cezanne, Dali, Matisse and other masters. Particularly impressive is the museum's main hall and the overall architecture itself.

Kawasaki City Museum

Close to Yokohama and within the nearby Todoroki Ryokuchi Park, this popular art museum features a number of impressive exhibits and art collections, together with an area concentrating on local history. Highlights at the Kawasaki City Museum include paintings, photos, modern art works, film screenings and various events, such as workshops, lectures and seminars.

Museum of Modern Art

Full of striking contemporary paintings, including the works of many highly acclaimed Japanese artists, the Museum of Modern Art can be found in nearby Kamakura, just a short distance from central Yokohama. With a large collection of limited edition prints, together with colourful oil paintings and works by many visiting international 20th- and 21st-century artists, this gallery is worth searching out.

Located in the Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park and within easy reach of Yokohama, the Pola Museum of Art is home to an exceptional collection of Japanese art works, numbering around 10,000 in total. Expect to see pottery, glassworks, paintings and sculptures, all of which enjoy spacious surroundings and effective lighting. This gallery is a relatively new edition to the region's arts scene.
